History of Brick

Bricks in the UK?

The majority of our existing homes and buildings were historically built using standard and special shaped clay bricks.

The unlimited design possibilities brick offers is a contributing factor to the unique appearance of our period properties. It is to their credit that centuries later, clay bricks are still the external material of choice for the majority of modern day house-builders.

Unfortunately, there has been a decline in their use on public, retail, leisure and industrial buildings. Most people would have probably known this because bricks form part of our every day built environment.

However, it's only when people need to buy bricks that they often realize how many there actually is to choose from!

Why so many?

To answer this question we must take a quick look back in time. Historically bricks were made by hand in small quantities and used in construction locally, primarily for their physical properties. Unlike present day, rarely did brick travel significant distances from their point of origin or have any intended visual characteristics. This all changed during the industrial revolution as transportation and methods of brick production speeded up.

Many independent brick makers found new markets for their product across the nation whilst also starting to pay more attention to the appearance of bricks.

Facing bricks became available in an increasing range of textures and colours and were in high demand during of major housebuilding programmes of the early and mid 20th century. As time rolled by the number of individual manufacturers reduced as a result of continuous acquisitions and mergers.

By the late 1900's brick makers became relentless in their product development, always keen to offer their house builders customers something different. This continues to present day which means that even though there are less manufacturers, the simple facing brick had become a confusing building material to buy and sell without a required level of expertise.
